10856-014(1)Rupinder Gedhu, Assistant Estimator at BAM studied Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Psychology at A-level and later went on to start a Radiography course at University. After completing her first year, Rupinder realised that Radiography wasn’t the career path for her and went on to work as an Estimating Administrator for a small construction company. Rupinder grew a passion for Construction and decided to further her construction career path with BAM as an Assistant Estimator whilst she studied a part-time BSc Degree in Commercial Management. Rupinder shared her thoughts on her ‘Earn while you learn’ experience:

“The amount of knowledge you pick up while working is massively underestimated. When you’re carrying out a job and it’s part of your day-to-day you absorb information and pick up on skills that would take a lot longer (or you may never understand) by purely sitting in a classroom. Working in a live environment on live jobs gives you a realistic understanding of how things function in ‘the real world’. You pick up on mistakes that you make which you will not necessarily have the opportunity to do in theory lessons. This will make you stand out from the crowd and have that edge that your fellow peers may not have. Another huge advantage is the additional support you get through your education. The level of expertise that you will have within a good construction company is invaluable, and I have found that your colleagues are more than happy to pass on their knowledge and help you wherever they can.”

Ryan Geldard from Leeds also discovered his passion for construction and excelled through his learning at BAM. AfterGeldard_Ryan2 leaving school at 16, Ryan attended Leeds College of Building where he studied a BTEC Higher National Diploma in Construction, qualifying with a Distinction grade. Ryan then went on to apply for an Assistant Site Manager role at BAM, and after a year of perseverance and building up his portfolio with experience at a local, medium sized building company, his application was successful.

In his new role, Ryan immediately started working on large projects including two new build universities at Leeds Met, Leeds Arena and a new build Health Care Centre in Scunthorpe. His career advice to any young people considering a career in construction is:

“If you are considering construction you are half-way there because you have the desire and are interested! Spend time speaking with people you know in the industry, visiting websites and requesting information from your local college. Don’t take no for an answer, and don’t let anyone tell you construction is a bad choice. There are a thousand roles in our industry suiting every type of person, which allow you to exceed your potential and the industry has changed a lot for the better. Finally, if you get a knock back you should persevere. The best jobs usually need a bit of time, research and application to get…..but take it from me, having done that, it’s well worth it! ”
